"The Sultan of Swat, forever swinging for the fences"

Babe Ruth, born George Herman Ruth Jr., was an American professional baseball player whose career in Major League Baseball (MLB) spanned 22 seasons, from 1914 through 1935. Nicknamed 'The Bambino' and 'The Sultan of Swat,' he began as a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox but achieved his greatest fame as a slugging outfielder for the New York Yankees. Ruth is regarded as one of the greatest sports heroes in American culture. He established many MLB batting records, including career home runs (714), runs batted in (RBIs) (2,213), bases on balls (2,062), slugging percentage (.690), and on-base plus slugging (OPS) (1.164). His 60 home runs in 1927 stood as a single-season record for 34 years. Off the field, Ruth was a larger-than-life figure, known for his gregarious personality, love of life, and charitable acts. His visits to children in hospitals became legendary, and his impact on baseball's popularity during the Roaring Twenties was immense, helping to usher in the 'live-ball' era of the sport. Ruth passed away on August 16, 1948, at the age of 53, after a battle with throat cancer. His legacy endures as a symbol of American grit and the transformative power of sport, with his name synonymous with baseball greatness. Fans still flock to his grave at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, New York, to pay respects to the man who changed the game forever.
